First light for attophysics

European physicists have performed the first experiments with an attosecond (10-18 seconds) light source. Markus Drescher and colleagues at the University of Bielefeld in Germany and the Technical University of Vienna in Austria used the ultrashort pulses to investigate the rearrangement of the electron cloud around a krypton atom in a pump-probe experiment (Nature 419 803).
