The early universe looks the same in both hemispheres according to new images from the Hubble Space Telescope. In 1995 a 10-day exposure of the Northern sky called the "Hubble deep field" gave astronomers their first detailed glimpse of the universe 12 billion years ago. Now Hubble has carried out a similar exposure for the southern hemisphere. In both case thousands of previously unseen galaxies have come to light. The results indicate that the universe formed uniformly in all directions, as predicted by current cosmological theories.
