India detonated three not five nuclear weapons earlier this year according to US researchers who are monitoring the comprehensive test ban treaty (CTBT). Both India and Pakistan - which claims to have exploded six nuclear weapons - also exaggerated the strength of their nuclear tests (B Barker et al. 1998 Science 281 1967).
